by Rev . Henry Green-- The summer of 2011 is finally over and the time has come for the Heritage Baptist Church family to begin our new church year!
We have experienced one of the hottest summers in recent memory. On Tuesday, August 23, 2011, we experienced an earthquake that registered 5.9 on the Richter scale. When the earthquake hit, I was in my office on the phone with a person who was on the 17th floor of the First Mariner Bank building in Baltimore. I could feel the shaking and the person said, "Do you feel that? The whole building is shaking!" I said, "Yes, I think you need to get to a safe place!" We ended the call. Two pictures fell in our home and the frames broke, but we can all be thankful that there was minimal damage and no loss of life. This was the most powerful earthquake to rock the east coast of the United States since1897 and the last one of any note since around 1944. As I am writing this column the entire east coast ofthe U.S. is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Irene (Irene Green and Irene White have taken enough grief about their names already. I will not mention anything here about their names in relation to this recent Hurricane!) So, thank goodness the summer of 2011 is coming to an end! It is time to turn our direction to serving our Lord as we begin a new year of Bible study and Worship and new activities for missions, ministry, and outreach!
USING YOUR GIFTS FOR GOD
God has given each of us gifts to be used for the Kingdom of God through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 12 the concept of using your gifts is strongly encouraged. From September 7-18th sheets will be provided in the office and hallway for you to sign-up for the ministry which best matches the gift or gifts. If you are already using your gifts in a significant way for God and would like to continue in the same manner, sign that list. If you are interested in developing new areas of service, select that one. Please read the scripture and pray for God's guidance in your place of service. If you would like to talk with someone about your place of service, please feel to call the members of the Nominating Committee (Tom Antonielli, Bill Darnell, Mary Ann Fulford, Sally Morehead, or the chair, Eleanor Sturgis). I am always available and I am confident that Ralph would be happy to speak to you about using your gifts for God. Thank you for your commitment to Heritage and to the Lord as you consider how you will serve the Lord this church year!
REMEMBERING, RENEWING, AND RENDERING
Sunday, September 11, 2011, will mark the tenth anniversary of a day we will never forget, but would liketo have never experienced. It is important that we mark such an occasion with an appropriate opportunity for us to remember. We will never forget and we must ever remain true to the cause of real freedom! We must renew our allegiance to one another and to what it truly means to respect the values that make our nation great. We must render ourselves available to advance the values of respect, compassion, and a commitment to a future that will appeal to our higher angels. The evil that brought us 9/11 will win only if we allow our freedoms to be diminished in any way! Let us render ourselves to a new commitment to real freedom!
