Responsive Reading of Ephesians 5:8-14 (REB)
Leader: Though you once were darkness, now as Christians you are light. Congregation: Prove yourselves at home in the light, for where there is light there is a harvest of goodness, righteousness, and truth. Leader: Learn to judge for yourselves what is pleasing to the Lord; take no part in the barren deeds of darkness, but show them up for what they are. Congregation: It would be shameful to mention even to mention what is done in secret. Leader: But everything is shown up by being exposed to the light, and whatever is exposed to the light itself becomes light. All: That is why it is said: awake, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you.

A popular song in the 1990’s was “Losing My Religion.” The writer, Peter Buck of R.E.M., composed the song in 1990, while he was learning to play a newly acquired mandolin. The title of the song is a spin on an old southern expression that can mean anything from being angry about something to unrequited love.
Today, many people are losing their religion because religion is not offering enough meaningful expressions of practical applications of faith. The applications of faith are there, but they are often drowned out by the voices of intolerance.
When you give up on being perfect, then God is able to work with you! When you lose your religion and get off the need to impress others with how much you believe in Jesus, then God has some good clay to shape and mold in a fashion for a good purpose.
When you finally lose your religion, you learn that…

Psalm 23 (KJV)
“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”
