“Surviving Harsh Words”
Servant leadership must be based on genuine love for God and others. Moses and Jesus followed this path in carrying out the God’s purpose in their time and for the greater good of all…
Moses complained to God that he was the wrong person to do what God was asking…
God answered and said, in effect, “I don’t get things wrong!” In reality God said, “I am who I am.”
God promised that the calling will bring liberation and will come full circle when they return to the mountain to receive the Commandments… They were liberated and they did receive God’s blessing and guidance on Mt. Sinai!
Liberation does not come apart from the hard and even harsh words of voices that challenge the status quo…
-
Moses survived the harsh words of his detractors in Egypt…
-
Moses survived the challenging words of God from the bush on the mountain… Sometimes we do not want to leave our comfort zone…
-
Moses survived the harsh words of the grumbling Hebrews who were now liberated from slavery…
Throughout our Christian journey it becomes necessary to redefine our understanding of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Over the years I have had many experiences to instruct me and assist me in this journey… This is what Peter discovered when he thought he had Jesus all figured out… His image of “Christ” (Messiah) was confused… He got it, but only defined through the filters he had been given… Jesus confronts Peter as if he is confronting Satan when Peter refuses to acknowledge the path that Jesus must take… Peter draws from his cultural, anecdotal, and limited knowledge of his religious instructions about Messiah…
Jesus knows differently, and from the time Peter acknowledges that he is the Christ; he begins to instruct the disciples about the path to the cross he must take.

Jesus Predicts His Death
From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.
“Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”
Matthew 16:21-28
