“Forgiveness”
Do you remember where you were and how you felt on Tuesday, September 11, 2001, from 8:46 to 10:28 am? What have we learned and how has that day in our history changed our lives?
Since 9/11/2001, we have learned that evil is real, extremism is very bad, and we can count on uncertainty. Since that day we have also changed in many ways. While the Constitution has not changed, we have lost (especially at an emotional level) a personal sense of freedom. In a practical way, cameras are everywhere and in our new digital world, your every move is being watched. As our civil liberties seem to be weakening, we seem to be less civil. We are less respectful of others, especially our elected leaders. We are more Machiavellian in our values and fractured as a nation. We are definitely more global.
On the Sunday following 9/11/2001, my sermon dealt with the topic of justice. Ten years later, I must deal with the meaning of Christian forgiveness. By forgiveness I do not mean sappy lip service that engenders only more resentment than healing. No, this is a life journey through a world of hurt!
Telling the Story of Faith
Exodus 14:19-31
God calls all believers to move beyond the present difficulties when our basic inclination is to withdraw into retreat. For some, their life story has become the imagery and events of September 11, 2001, yet we must not allow this to be our defining moment as a nation or as a people of faith.
Teaching the Meaning of Acceptance
Romans 14:1-12
Paul teaches that we are to welcome those who do not act or even think as we do.
Transcending Our Natural Instincts
Matthew 18:21-35
The most difficult thing we are ever asked to do in life is to forgive others as we have been forgiven. In many respects it is the most difficult thing to do in life!
How do we move beyond this day? We must tell our story, we must teach a better way, and we live out the true meaning of our faith every day.
