“Basic Christian Affirmations”
Greece, the birthplace of democracy and the cradle of western civilization, is at the center of an economic mess that has the potential of creating a global economic crisis that will take generations to recover. How does the church respond to such crisis without becoming reactionary? How do we avoid falling into the trap of fear based thinking with “end of the world” fatalism? How can we be a positive witness for Christ with a constructive voice, working for real world solutions?
When high profile public marriages last as long as 72 days and the public is distracted by the antics of public figures making money on their dysfunctional behavior, what message can the church offer as an alternative to this self-absorbed narcissistic way of life?
From my perspective, I think we might need to get back to some basic Christian affirmations to discover the way forward in a world that is changing and challenging at every turn. So, what better place to go for our basic Christian affirmations than Jesus?
Affirmation Number One: Jesus is the Answer
Matthew 5:1-12
Affirmation Number Two: God is Love
1 John 4:7-8
One of the First Truth’s in the Bible is that we are created in the image of God and are called to see others in that manner. If I see you as someone created in the image of God, I must, by necessity, see you as a person worthy of respect and love.
Affirmation Number Three: All Truth is God’s Truth
Matthew 25:1-12
When we are faced with difficult challenges and we see a potential crisis on the horizon, and when we know there is a chance of radical change from the comfort of our current status, we must begin to prepare for those challenges. That is the message of Jesus about the bride groom. God is speaking to us in many ways…
We Must Prepare for God’s Call (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18)
We Do Not Know When God Will Call (Matthew 25:13)
We Must Be Ready to Respond When God Calls
Are you ready?

Twenty-First Sunday after Pentecost
Remembrance Sunday
November 6, 2011
Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, and he began to teach them.
The Beatitudes
He said:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Matthew 5:1-12 (NIV) |
