Heritage's Robo Warriors team competed in a statewide robot competition held at UMBC on January 31. The team, led by Gayle Stucker, comprised of 5 fourth graders and with additional adult assistance by Dan Cogliano.
Despite their young age, the team performed well against 80 other teams comprised of elementary and middle school students. The team learned building, problem solving and programming skills while working with robots built from LEGO parts. See photos of the competition in the picture gallery.
The statewide event was organized by First Lego League. FLL is a global program created to get kids excited about science and technology. Geared for ages 9-14, FLL utilizes theme-based challenges to engage kids in research, problem solving, and engineering. All challenges must be pre-programmed into the robot, so no real-time or remote control of the robot is allowed. This year's theme for the competition was "Climate Connections". As part of the competition, the Robo Warriors researched and presented an oral report on the impact of global warming on honey bees.
The team members (starting in the upper left row) are Christopher, Sabrina, Andrew, Arjun and Jonathan. Congratulations to our Robo Warriors!
