The Backpack Buddies local mission project is very active and continues to grow. With your support and generous donations from the Annapolis Rotary Club and the Maryland Teachers' Association, we have been able to purchase additional backpacks and shelving for the food storage.
The greatest food needs right now are individual boxes or bowls of cereal, individual packages of instant oatmeal, snack size cans or packages of tuna, crackers in plastic sleeves, snack size cups of pudding, snack size cups of applesauce and granola or cereal bars. With our program expanding, our work and storage area has relocated to another part of the church building. Please put all of your food donations into the tub marked BACKPACK BUDDIES located in the hall outside the church office and one of the volunteers will take it down the hall to the new location. If you prefer making a monetary donation, be sure that your check is made out to Heritage Baptist Church. Clearly mark BACKPACK BUDDIES on the check and on the outside of the envelope.
We are also in need of additional volunteers. The bags are filled and delivered to the school on a rotating basis so you would not be obligating your time weekly. The bags are filled at the convenience of the volunteers early in the week and delivered to the school on Thursday mornings. This volunteer opportunity is available of both men and women! If you would like to help fill bags and/or deliver the food, please contact the church office or speak with Jeannine Salyers, Frankie Morehead, Barbara Munz, or Mary Ann Fulford. The smiles on the faces of the children and thanks from the teachers will warm your heart!
This has made it possible to increase the number of weekly filled backpacks to twenty-six (26). County statistics show that the number of children on the free or reduced meals program is increasing. The backpacks from our church are helping to supplement food on the weekends for at least twenty-six and we look forward to doing more. |
