In honor of the youth entering the scarecrow contest at the Anne Arundel County Fair, here are some little known facts about scarecrows around the world and throughout history!
- First scarecrows in recorded history were in Egypt along the Nile river to scare away quail!
- Twenty-five hundred years ago, the Greeks carved scarecrows. The Romans followed this custom and introduced it throughout France, Germany, and England!
- At first, Japanese farmers hung old rags, meat, or fish bones from bamboo poles. Then, they set the sticks on fire and the smell was so bad, it kept both birds and other animals away from the rice fields!
- In medieval England, scarecrows were boys ages 9 and older. They patrolled fields with a bag of stones and would chase off the crows by waving their arms and throwing stones!
Remember, HBC youth's Day at the Fair is Saturday, September 13. Meet at the church at 8:30 AM to arrive at the fairgrounds in time to enter the Scarecrow context. Admission is paid but each student needs to bring money for rides and food. They should return to the church by 4 PM. If you have questions, please contact Leigh Ann Gallion at
