ralph_at_pianoLet everything that has breath praise the Lord."  (Psalm 150:6)  .  This month features two outstanding musical opportunities involving our church.

On Sunday, November 15, our choir members will be joining their voices with singers from about twenty area churches in a Festival Service of Scripture and Song.  This will be held in the (newly-renovated) Naval Academy Chapel, beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The public is invited to this event, which is free.  A photo I.D. is required for entry onto the Naval Academy grounds.  Only vehicles with proper security clearance are allowed to drive onto the grounds, but a shuttle bus will be provided.  For more information, contact the church office.

Sunday, November 29, is the first Sunday of Advent.  That means that our Hanging of the Green ceremony will be held that day, during the morning service.  Make plans to be present and "sing in" this joyful season of preparation for Christ's coming.

 To God be the glory,

 Ralph

Katherine Dennicott Davis was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in 1892.  After graduating from Wellesley College she settled in Concord, Massachusetts.  She loved to compose all types of music, but she did not wish to seem "arty"; she felt strongly that music should be practical and accessible for everyone.  She wrote the hymn "Let All Things Now Living" in the 1920s, publishing it as a choral anthem in 1939.  It is a wonderful hymn of praise that lists a multitude of reasons why everyone living should praise God the Creator.  Another of her compositions that is familiar to many people is the Christmas song "The Little Drummer Boy."  Katherine Davis died in 1980, after having touched many persons' lives with her music.

Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving

to God the Creator triumphantly raise,

who fashioned and made us, protected and stayed us,

who guideth us on to the end of our days.

His banners are o'er us, His light goes before us,

a pillar of fire shining forth in the night,

'Til shadows have vanished and darkness is banished,

as forward we travel from light into light.

His law He enforces, the stars in their courses,

the sun in His orbit, obediently shine.

The hills and the mountains, the rivers and fountains,

the deeps of the ocean proclaim Him Divine.

We, too, should be voicing our love and rejoicing,

with glad adoration a song let us raise,

'Til all things now living unite in thanksgiving

to God in the highest, hosanna and praise!
